Assessments

future of Assessments: what to do.
Assessments are vital in assuring that we acquire the correct data to measure how our students are progressing in the classrooms. Currently, I utilize the same techniques that my teachers used to assess me when I was in school in the late 80’s up to the 90’s except for a few that integrates the use of the arts to asses student growth or progress on a certain skill or concept. When asking questions, I use literal questioning as well as critical thinking questions to ensure that students are able to utilize these skills to their full capacities.

As for the future, I plan to use the same techniques of assessments while at the same time make it challenging and life improving. As stated in the reading by Margaret Heritage, “there is too much emphasis on assessment and not enough on formation of learning". In simple terms, we have focused so much on having the students pass the assessments while we should have focused on forming knowledge from what they have learned. I am a firm believer that we should not rely solely on students passing the test, but we should confirm on the need for our students to pass the test of life.

What should I do next? I’m going to try to create assessments that related to local events. For example, I will try to create a reading test using a story set locally so students can connect to. Most importantly, I will try to device an assessment that is going to require students to use their understanding to create a project to showcase the skills they have acquired.
